Hi. FYI This knife was definitely made by Western States Cutlery out of Boulder Colorado. I don't know what model or designator Western Auto used for this model, but the Western States designation was L36K. The spacer pattern indicates that this is a 1941 version. The L36K and L36 were first introduced in 1936 (no connection between 1936 and L36). Blades were identical. Differences were in pommel/guard. The L36K had the bird beak or knight's head pommel and half guard. The L36 had a flat pommel and S-guard. The spacer pattern had double brass in triple red spacers in 3 locations in the handle. 1936 also coincides with the first year Western advertised the bird beak / knight's head pommel. In 1941, the L36K is still with us, now with 3 single brass spacers in double red spacers and the L36 is dropped, being replaced with the L36KG - a combo of the L36 and L36K - bb/kh pommel with S-guard.The L36/36K/36KG was not one of the models produced during WW2.The L36K was brought back after the war. The spacer pattern was again different - identical at guard and pommel with no colored spacers in the middle of the handle. The earliest I have found an advertisement for the L36K is 1950, but it is possible that they came back into production in 1949. The stamp would have included "PAT'D MADE IN USA" as the 3rd line of the stamp. The K was dropped and it became just L36 again in 1955.
