Description: Very good condition hardcover book. I suspect this book to be rebound in the 1950s for Ambassador Lincoln MacVeagh. Volume 1 of a two volume set. About 7-3/4” tall. This book was in the personal library of Lincoln MacVeagh, former US ambassador to Spain, Portugal, Greece, Yugoslavia, South Africa, and Iceland. He was also US Minister to Greece. Many of these appointments were during the sensitive times of WWII. Exterior: 3/4 leather binding is clean tight and square. Four raised bands on the spine. Leather spine and corners. Swirl design on paper over the boards. Gilt text on the spine. Top page edges gilt. Lincoln MacVeagh’s initials in gilt bottom of spine. Light corner and spine end wear. Some diagonal surface cracks on spine. Interior: pages are clean with no tears. About 10 pages in a row, first part of the NOTES section, have a small bottom corner crease. Page margins lightly toned. There are some marginalia notes in light pencil. Lincoln and Margaret MacVeagh bookplate on front pastedown. The INTRODUCTION section has 349 pages. The NOTES section has 393 pages.
