Description: Walter J. Shaffer [1891 1974] was one of the original 38 confirmed American pilots to join the Lafayette Escadrille in 1916. He was also an Early Bird who learned to fly in Pennsylvania in 1915, then traveled to France and enlisted in the Service Aeronautique. He was trained at Avors, Tours Pau, and after completing his flight training, he was assigned to a French Squadron. Schaffer was assigned to SPA 156, then SPA 38 and was credited with shooting down one enemy aircraft and one enemy balloon. On October 10, 1918, he was shot down over Belgium, captured and held prisoner in Germany. Schaffer was able to escape but was recaptured and held until the end of the war. After the war he flew as a barnstormer, test pilot and as an instructor pilot for Curtiss Jenny. He also served during World War II and finished his flying career for Eastern Airlines in 1952. Listed for auction is a commemorative airmail cover signed by Walter J. Shaffer. The cover commemorates the dedication of the Harrisburg Airport, Pennsylvania in 1930. The autograph is signed ''Lieut. W.J. Shaffer [Lafayette Flying Corps] in black fountain pen. The cover measures 5.50 x 3.75 inches, with trivial toning, otherwise it is in fine condition. The autograph is authentic, uncommon and will be a desirable addition to any World War I collection.
