Description: Watch Hill Lighthouse Westerly, RI. A nostalgic art print of the Watch Hill Lighthouse in Westerly, Rhode Island originally painted on a nautical chart by William B. MacGregor Jr. -------------------------------------------------- Watch Hill Lighthouse sits atop a bluff on the North side of the entrance to Fishers Island sound in Westerly, Rhode Island. Watch Hill is one of the oldest lighthouse sites in America and is an active aid to navigation. Watch Hill Lighthouse has served as a nautical beacon for ships since 1745, when the RI colonial goverment erected a watchtower and beacon during the French & Indian and Revolutionary war. The original structure was destroyed in a 1781 storm, and rebuilt in 1807 and was 35 feet high. In 1827, a rotating light was installed to differentiate it from the Stonington Harbor Light in CT. Erosion forced it to close in 1855 and build a new lighthouse in 1856 away from the bluff edge. This is the current structure and the tower is 45 feet high. The steamer Metis crashed off Watch Hill in 1872, killing 130 people. In 1873, lighthouse keeper Captain Jared Starr Crandall was awarded for his rescue operations involving the Metis. In 1879, Capt. Crandall's widow became the first woman lighthouse keeper there. A US Life-saving station was built next to it where it operated until the 1940s, but it was destroyed in 1963. In 1907, the steamer Larchmont collided with a schooner, killing 200 people four miles from the lighthouse. The hurricane of 1938 caused severe damage to the lighthouse. In 1962 the Leif Viking ran aground a few hundred feet from the lighthouse in 1962 and was stranded for nine days. The lighthouse was automated in 1986 and is leased to the Watch Hill Light keepers Association. MacGregor Jr. Watercolors Nautical Chart Artist William B. MacGregor, Jr. was born in Medfield, MA, the son and grandson of Norfolk Hunt Club kennel masters. Many of his family members were self taught artists, woodcarvers, automobile mechanics and veterans of foreign wars including his father a WW1 US Army veteran. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts. In May,2018, and for one year, four of Bill’s automotive related paintings were on display at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA.
