Description: We Die Alone David Howarth MacMillan Co., 1955 Hardcover. No DJ David Howarth, who was a British officer at a secret naval base in Shetland, UK during the war, writes that he knew "bare bones" about a failed mission by a Norwegian team who traveled from the base to the northern coast of Norway near the Arctic Ocean to destroy a German airfield control tower. Of the twelve-member team, Jan Baalsrud, was the only survivor. Howarth had read a "graphic report" written by Baalsrud, which Howarth thought "left a lot unsaid. Ten years later, intent "to find out the whole truth" about Jan's extraordinary 9-week escape following the attack by the Nazi's on March 29, 1943, Howarth not only interviewed him but traveled along the escape route with Jan and others. Doing so convinced him that as unbelievable as it seemed, Jan's experience is one of the most extraordinary WWII survival stories. Published by The MacMillan Company, there is no dust jacket, just a trimmed portion has been left inside the book which is unfortunate as is the discoloration of the cloth-bound book spine and faded sections on the front and back cover; compromising the book's overall condition. On the other hand, the exterior corners and edges reveal minimal shelf wear. The hard cover interior side of boards, end pages and text (231 pages) are clean, unmarked. While there is a map of the escape on the front board and loose end, the back end page and board is blank. There are five (2) collections of black and white photographs inserted throughout the book. The edges of some of the illustration pages are slightly discolored Please review the photos to see the details described. The story is well-worth reading. The 1957 film, Nine Lives, is based on Howarth's book
