The author contends that the apostles were biased in their view of the resurrection because of their Jewish beliefs and that this bias was continued in the historic creeds of the Church. He claims that this Jewish literalism presents too many unsolvable problems, and instructs his readers to put less emphasis on the teachings of Paul and Peter and to focus on the words of Jesus instead. This clears the way, in his view, to reject "the gross resurrection-fancies of the Pharisees" and to find the true "spiritual" meaning of the resurrection.James Morris Whiton, American Congregationalist, born in 1833 at Boston, Massachusetts. Rev. Whiton was a pastor, a teacher, and a writer. He was on the editorial staff of The Outlook, and held both conservative and liberal views, depending upon the topic at hand.
