Wathen was ordained in 1958 in Owensboro, Ky., into the Wathen/Spalding clans, two historic Catholic families. Fr. was related to the late Bp. Martin John Spalding (d. 1872), one of the Fathers at the Council of Baltimore. When the New Mass came out circa 1969, Fr. steadfastly refused to say the Novus Ordo Missae, being one of only a handful priests in America to do so. Fr.'s other books include: The Great Sacrilege, I Know Mine and Mine Know Me, Thoughts on Mary, and NFP (Natural Family Planning, why it is immoral). Fr. Wathen was one of the first priests in America to establish a permanent, traditional, Latin Mass chapel, in 1970, in Louisville, KY. I knew Fr. Wathen personally, and this work, Who Shall Ascend, was Fr.'s magnum opus.
