Description: This is among a large number of playbills currently available from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare December 10th, 1945 "Playgoer" playbill from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the SIG HERZIG, JOHNNY BURKE and JAMES VAN HEUSEN musical comedy "NELLIE BLY" at the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The production would open January 21st, 1946 at the Adelphi Theatre in New York City and close February 2nd, 1946 after only sixteen performances.) ..... The musical starred WILLIAM GAXTON and VICTOR MOORE and featured MARILYN MAXWELL in the title role (replaced out-of-town by JOY HODGES), BENAY VENUTA, LUBOV ROUDENKO, JACK WHITNEY, BIL and CORA BAIRD (their roles would be eliminated in Boston), THE DEBONAIRS, EDWARD H. ROBINS, WALTER ARMIN, ROBERT STRAUSS, ELFRIDA DERWENT (role eliminated in Boston), ARTELLS DICKSON, WILLIAM O'SHEA, FRED PETERS, HAROLD MURRAY, JACK VOETH, LARRY STUART, EDDY DI GENOVA, DORIS SWARD, JACK SWARD, DRUCILLA STRAIN, FAITH DANE and SUZIE BAKER ..... Includes a half page advertisement for the "First Philadelphia Appearance of ZERO MOSTEL" at the Coronet Dinner Club (last scanned image) ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Divertissement", "Hong Kong To Hoboken", "I Did It For the Mrs.", "I've Got To Get Somewhere With You", "In Less Than Eighty Days", "A Very Silly Story" and "When a Fellow Gets To Thinking" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of light creasing along the seam, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
