Description: Berlin Diary, The Journal of a Foreign Correspondent 1934-1941AuthorWilliam L ShirerPublisher Hamish Hamilton, London, 1941Printing DetailsFirst UK edition, first printing (indicated by no date to copyright page and no later printings stated). Hardback, red cloth titled to spine. 22.5 x 14cm, 489pp.About the BookThe first printing of William L Shirer's diary of the road to the Second World War. Shirer was a little known broadcaster in 1940 when he decided there might be a book in the diary he had kept in Europe during the 1930s, specifically those sections dealing with the collapse of the European democracies and the rise of Nazi Germany. When it was first published in 19141, the energy, the passion, the electricity in it were palpable. It was an instant success, and it became the main source of reference against which thoughtful Americans judged the rush of events in Europe. It stands as one of the finest examples of journalistic witness.ConditionWhilst the book remains in strong readable condition, the spine is faded and there is some tearing to the cloth at the head of the spine and the rear joint is starting to fray a little. Some marking to the read cloth but the contents, whilst a little tanned, are in good condition.
