Description: Original engraving by John Sartain of William Makepease Thackeray . Sartain (1808-1897) was an English born American artist who pioneered mezzotint engraving in the US. Consider the best engraver of his time. Engraving is over 150 years old. Made around 1850’s Condition: no foxing . toning on edge see photos. Would look really good with an acid free mat and black frame it would look wonderful . Really nice considering its age Great condition see photos and excellent example of Sartain work. Size: large 12 inches by 9 1/2 inches actual engraving , picture without writing 5 1/2 by 4 1/2 approximately If you google John Sartain you will see many collections have this engraving. The library of Congress sells photos of this engraving. Made for Electic Magazine but note this engraving unlike others does not say made for the eclectic magazine. Just says engraved by Sartain and his name. Other engravings are smaller on eBay from either being cut or out of a small book. This is not a copy but an original engraving. Great piece of history. We got these while we were living in Philadelphia. Bought at an antique store and always thought we would open a store to sell prints but now retired so just selling. Have over 200 engravings. Have sat in a box for over 30 years.
