Description: The item for sale is an oil painting that was probably created around the middle of the twentieth century by the Pennsylvania artist William Stoddard Loughran. The artist is from the Northeastern United States and eventually lived in Bucks County Pa. He also lived and studied art in France. He studied art at the Art Students League in New York as well. The subject of the painting is an Arizona desert landscape. The left side of the painting has a rock formation close to the viewer. This forms a screen for the flat area and distant hills. There is a real sense of distance and atmosphere in the expanse behind the screen. The tones of the paint are muted. There is an exhibition label on the back that gives the title and dimensions. The painting is signed in the lower right. The painting is in very fine condition. It has some dirty spots near the top. The back of the frame is sealed with a paper dust cover. The canvas is over a solid backing perhaps canvas board or more likely the canvas has been laid down to a board. There is an area in the upper right where the canvas is lifting off the backing. This is not too distracting because it is off to a corner. There is some rippling of the canvas in the lifting area. There is a mysterious circular ring in the lower left as shown in photograph 5. This is hard to see. Overall, the paint is stable with no losses. The paint retains its original intensity. The frame is in excellent condition with no scratches nor damage. The painting size is 18 3/4" x 21 3/4". The total size is 20 3/4" x 25".
