"Liberated lines design" great original acrylic on board painting by Willie Lee ATKYNS ( American 1913-1987) Signed lower right and dated 1974, titled and date on the back. Paintings is unframed. Willie Lee Atkyns influenced many aspiring artists in the Washington, D.C. and central Pennsylvania area. Largely self-taught, Atkyns admired the paintings of Wassily Kandinsky and produced realistic, abstract, and non-objective works of art. Establishing a successful career early in his life, Atkyns debuted in New York at #10 Gallery in 1941. During WW II his talents were employed by U.S.Army map service. In 1945, after resigning a position with the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, he taught art in schools he established in Washington, D.C., and, later, at Puzzletown, Johnstown, Altoona, and Indiana, Pennsylvania.A number of works by the artist are in Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. Among the public and private collections in which Lee Atkyns is represented is the prestigious Phillips Collection (Washington D.C.) His paintings has appeared in exhibits at the Smithsonian Institute, National Academy of Design, The Corcoran Gallery, Utah Arts Council, Toledo Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute Museum of Art, Butler Institute of American Art, Portland Museum of Art and many others.
