Description: A super rare art pottery example from the William J Walley Pottery out of West Sterling, Massachusetts. He operated from 1898 until his passing in 1919. From my research, I have found that he produced his wares by hand and used a multiple of different glazes, some of which rival the other great potteries such as Grueby which also operated in the general area of the country during this time. This chamber stick exhibits a rich blended glaze in autumn hues with various shades of brown, tan and cream tones. The mark is a die cast WJW with also an S, not sure of this added mark. It stands just short of 3 3/4” tall at the back of the handle, 2 3/4” at the tallest part of the rolled rim. The body measures 6 3/4” back of handle to front rim and 4 3/4” across widest area at back by handle. I have looked this item over under magnification and can find no damage or repair whatsoever. I will point out under magnification that I did notice a pin head size glaze skip or glaze fleck on each side of the handle where the rolled lip comes up to the corner at the back. It is so minute that I believe it to be a non-issue. These spots really cannot be seen without magnification in bright light. There also appear to be some pinpoint bubbles in the thick glaze on the body of this chamber stick, an issue from the manufacturing process. I have posted numerous pictures of this wonderful item, please view all these pictures as they are considered part of the description. All reasonable offers will be considered. Please check my listings often as I will be posting numerous fine examples of glass, pottery and porcelain in the near future. Thank you.
