Ms. Picken was also the first woman trustee of FIT Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City as well as one of the 5 original directors of the costume Institute, now part of the Metropolitan Museum of art, also in New York City. Mary Brooks Picken wrote almost 100 books on sewing, dressmaking, needle arts, fashion and also wrote the first Singer Sewing Book. She died in a nursing home in Williamsport, Pa at the age of 94.
