WONDER WOMAN #83 (1994) BRIAN BOLLAND BONDAGE COVER DC COMICS 9.4 NM

Description: DC COMICS In chains, and a gun to the head Much as the music industry had from the mid-1960's to the early 1980's thanks to the influx of pop and rock groups ranging from The Beatles to Sex Pistols to Culture Club and Duran Duran, the comic book industry experienced its own British Invasion in the mid-1980's, when DC Comics went to the United Kingdom to discover and recruit new talent for American comics. To say that their mission was successful would be a gross understatement; the talent they found would bring DC, Marvel and the comic industry in general the greatest creators of the dawning Modern Age of Comics. Among the writers: Alan Moore, Grant Morrison and Neil Gaiman, to name but a few. Among the artists, Alan Davis, Dave Gibbons and BRIAN BOLLAND. Most known for his artwork on the seminal graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke written by Alan Moore, Bolland was brought on as cover artist for DC's Wonder Woman in 1992, when George Perez concluded his five year run on the series with Wonder Woman #62. Bolland began his tenure the following month, and he would remain on the series through Wonder Woman #100, creating a total of 38 covers before he'd pass the proverbial baton to his successor. Realism was Bolland's approach to artwork, his style far-less fantastical and "comic booky" than that of George Perez. Wonder Woman, thanks to Bolland's covers along with stories by William Messner-Loebs and pencils by Lee Moder, was a markedly different series than the one launched in 1987 by Perez. Indeed, dramatic shifts in tone, style and direction would come to define the entirety of Wonder Woman (Vol 2), as each of the successive creative teams that would carry the series to the end of its run in 2006 would be a bold and dramatic departure from that which came before. WONDER WOMAN #83, Bolland's 20th consecutive cover for the series, is representative of "that which came before" where Diana herself is concerned. Created in 1941 by writer and psychologist William Moulton Marston, Wonder Woman was a powerful female heroine unlike any that had come before -- but she wasn't without her weaknesses. Her main weakness, her "Kryptonite", was being bound by a man; in other words, if a man were to tie her up, her powers would leave her and she'd be helpless. Marston, of course, was known for many things -- and his fetish for female bondage was one of them. As the main writer of Wonder Woman's earliest adventures, Bondage factored into his stories often, and Diana just as often found herself on the wrong side of a Palomar knot. Bondage Covers in general were very popular during the Golden Age and remained popular, though to a lesser degree, in the early part of the Silver Age. The exploitative and suggestive artwork proliferated across many genres of comics, notably horror books, but bondage often found its way into superhero comics as well, with Marston being one of its greatest advocates. Indeed, Wonder Woman was drawn in bondage on more covers than any other female character in a superhero title. But with the coming of the Comics Code Authority, bondage covers disappeared quickly. It also didn't take too long for Wonder Woman's weakness to bondage to be written out of the character's mythos, and by the early 1980's, it was nothing but a memory. Still, it's not an aspect of the character that will be forgotten, either, and Bolland's cover is an excellent example of exactly that. His depiction of Diana in chains, however, is meant to be metaphorical, not literal. Either way, of course, it's a captivating image, striking for its uniqueness in a comics landscape that is no longer used to imagery that was once far more ubiquitous. Illustrated by Bolland three decades ago, it's allure (obviously) continues to this very day--- and it's is exactly why today is the day to give your collection exactly what it deserves.
