Based on the inscription on the sole, it is believed to be the work of Mr. Tozo Kaizawa (Usashikan), a well-known social activist of the Ainu people. Mr. Tozo Kaizawa (Usashikan) is famous for his lectures on the Ainu people throughout Japan and his book “The Ainu Cry”. Although not a woodcarver, he also exhibited his work at the Hokkaido Ainu Handicrafts Exhibition sponsored by the Hokkaido prefectural government in 1935.
