Description: World Airways, Inc. was organized in 1948 with authority to conduct worldwide supplemental air transportation only. Initial service was between New York and Puerto Rico. Prior to December 1, 1978, the effective date of the Airline Deregulation Act, World Airways had engaged in supplemental passenger, cargo and military air transportation services in the United States and overseas. On May 29, 1981 service was begun from Baltimore to London and Frankfurt. An identical official cachet was used at Baltimore for dispatches to both European cities. Covers were not backstamped at either London or Frankfurt. This cover was carried on the inaugural World Airways flight from the Baltimore-Washington International Airport Station in Baltimore, Maryland to Frankfurt, Germany and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as WO-F13x. World ended all of its scheduled services on September 15, 1986 as part of an overall economic policy. It dismissed 57 percent of its staff and reverted to a charter and aircraft maintenance operator.
