In WW II he was a B-17 co-pilot in the 8th Air Force, 390th Bomb Group, 569th Squadron. The group started ops in August 1943 and the author was a replacement crewman in November. Right away he got yellow jaundice and went to the hospital for a while. When he returned his crew and the other crews in his Quonset hut had all been shot down. The pilot went on to finish his 28 tours over Germany. He flew in several different aircraft. For his last mission, April 13 he was finally a lead pilot. The author stayed in the reserves and was recalled during Korea but did not see combat. He later in the post Korean era trained on fighter jets and was even an F-4 pilot. It appears that during Vietnam he was actually a Air Force Maintenance officer in the DaNang area
