Description: This is an extremely rare, and perhaps one-of-a-kind image World War One U.S. Navy image. This is a photo brought back from WWI by a US Navy sailor named Joseph Mondzelski of Parson, PA who appears to have served aboard destroyer tender USS Black Hawk and/or USS Lake, largely in Scotland (Kirkwall/Orkney islands). He also took photos of USS Lakeview, a transport ship that operated near Scotland too, and appears to have been familiar with that crew. Type & Size: A 4x2.5 original photograph. Condition: The back side of most photos in this lot have remnants from being glued in a scrapbook. Please see photos for condition. Two U.S. Navy sailors pose on deck, likely aboard a naval vessel in Scotland during 1918. The sailors are dressed in traditional navy uniforms and hats, with an American flag visible in the background, indicating their service during World War I. The image captures a moment of camaraderie between the sailors, reflecting the maritime culture and military pride of the era. During World War I, the U.S. Navy played a vital role in supporting Allied forces, with sailors stationed in various locations including Scotland. The USS Black Hawk and USS Lake were significant vessels during the war, utilized for repair and support operations. Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands served as a strategic base for naval operations, where many sailors like Joseph Mondzelski were stationed. The photograph exemplifies the experiences and personal connections formed among service members during this tumultuous time.
