Description: Original WW2 (1945) British MAP INDEX Sheet entitled "CODE U - ASIA & EAST INDIES" (Scale 1:1,000,000) Index sheets such as this were issued with large and complete packs of maps known as 'folios', and as such are rarer than the actual maps themselves. They helped serve as an initial checklist on receipt, and could also be used as a working reference sheet for the officers to whom they were issued. More often than not, they were disposed of and hardly ever come up for sale. This example has some handwritten ticks against a number of maps which suggest it was used in the Middle East.
