By the outbreak of World War II it was necessary to keep highly detailed aeronautical charts to properly direct the unprecedentedly large groups of aircraft that were operational during the conflict, especially as both sides began to employ long-range strategic bombing. Though this collection appears to be of civilian origin, maps such as these would have been used to coordinate the fighter defense of Britain as well as charting the optimum approaches to targets on the mainland by the aircraft of USAAF and RAF Bomber Command. The first tentative raids on Berlin took place in August, 1940, but it was not until 1943 that the the US 8th Air Force was set up to launch devastating bombing missions of hundreds of aircraft. As follows:1.
