Description: Original WW2 CAPTURED German map of OCCUPIED POLAND with GROUND CONDITIONS OVERPRINT. Produced in August 1944, it's headed "Nur für den Dienstgebrauch" (equivalent to a "RESTRICTED" British military map). KOSTEN, SCHRIMM (SREM), LISSA, GOSTINGEN etc The overprinted layer has been added in purple with various different types of hatched areas. Across the map is the word 'KUPPIG' in large letters which, according to online dictionaries, means 'rounded'. I've had it suggested to me that this refers to a 'hilly' landscape, which would make sense. (I have another map listed which also features such shading and the word 'kuppig', but on that map most of the other labelled areas read "ZAHLREICHE SUMPFIGE STELLEN" meaning "NUMEROUS MARSHY PLACES", so this may be similar to what was known in Allied mapping as a "GOING MAP" to indicate the suitability of the terrain for heavy vehicles in open countryside.) From a large collection recently sold off by Edinburgh University - hence ink stamping to margin. (From time to time, the government distributes excess stocks of its surplus maps to various national institutions.) Please see my other WW2 (and WW1) maps, photos, documents, kit etc. (Seller's Ref - U1043)
