Description: Original WW2 RAF "SECRET" map of "PALERMO" (SICILY, ITALY). It was produced in December 1940 by HQ RAF Middle East for a sustained Allied bombing campaign which began the following month. Until the launch of this campaign in early January 1941, there had only been one raid by French aircraft over six months earlier. PALERMO was a vital Axis port for naval escorts for convoys to North Africa, with Italian and German operational air bases close by. RAF BOMBERS based in MALTA conducted the raids, and this map would have been used as part of the planning. Compared to similar maps I have seen, this would appear to be an overview map to accompany other material pertaining to exact targets etc. This sheet would have been produced in very small numbers, and due to its official retention at GHQ MIDDLE EAST it has remained in excellent condition (see ink stamp photo). A rare item to have survived over eighty years in such condition. Measures 36cm x 25cm. Will be sent carefully rolled in a cardboard tube. Please see my other WW2 (and WW1) maps including several more of Italy. (Seller's Ref - ST2)
