III rifle Pattern 1907 bayonet made in 1918. This also comes with a metal and leather scabbard. The No. 1 Mk. III rifle was the Australian main rifle during both World Wars and afterwards. Bayonet production began in 1913, the hooked lower quillon was deleted in 1915. This one has the deleted quillon. Production ceased in 1927 and began again in 1940 during the second World War. In 1942, production moved from Lithgow to Orange. Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good Plus - Fine condition, considering its age. The press catch is functional with very stiff spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They have light impact marks and light scrapes. The coloring has started to change to a darker patina. The two screw escutcheons securely fasten the wood grips. They have light oxidation and strong slots. The wood panels have compressions and draglines, most notably on the left panel. The wood has darkened with age. The spine, fullers and sides have light handling marks with no notable wear. There are no nicks or dings on the blade, and it appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. Most of the remaining finish has started to change to a darker patina. The left side ricasso is marked with a crown over a shield / "LITHGOW / 1918". The right ricasso is marked with "X" in between two "A's" within a 6-point star over an "L" within a shield. The right side guard has a marking that is hard to see, but looks like "2nd MD" next to the serial number "64540". The right side pommel is marked "A / 11337". The leather/metal scabbard is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age. The locket and chape are both securely attached to the leather body. They both do not wiggle, the leather has retained its thickness. The locket and chape both have light impact marks and scrapes. The coloring has turned to a darker patina. The leather body has no rips or tears but there are light compressions and draglines. The stitching is sewn tightly. It retains most of its original finish. There are no visible markings on the scabbard. This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your Australian WWI rifle, or a bayonet collection in general.
