Description: Yamaha instruments hit American shores in the late 1960s, going on to establish a reputation for manufacturing some of the most popular musical instruments since. Yamaha first introduced the Model YFH-731 Flugelhorn in 1971 as a professional model, many were built here in America - in Grand Rapids, MI. The serial number on this instrument dates to the mid-70s when the flugelhorn’s voice was being featured more and more in both the jazz and rock-n-roll worlds. 11 mm / 0.433 Bore 151.8 mm / 6” Diameter two-piece yellow brass bell Yamaha alloy, bottom sprung pistons Silver plating appears to be fully intact Yamaha taper mouthpipe, accepts the large Morse taper shank mouthpiece. The flugelhorn is often an aspiring trumpet player’s first utility horn. Adult players might use their flugelhorn on that ballad in the second set of a big band gig, or maybe use it for playing in more intimate venues. The bore size is a nice compromise between the traditional small bore of a flugelhorn and the more familiar medium large bore of a a trumpet. The result is a solid and versatile flugelhorn for small jazz combo or pit orchestra. Blends well with others for big band work also. It projects well and has very good intonation. This Yamaha flugelhorn was owned by respected local educator and local professional trumpeter who brings both fire and finesse to his playing. This was his main flugel used for big band gigs, show bands and numerous CLO productions over about a 13 year period. It then sat in his home studio receiving little play, then into the closet for a while. When it came to us, the first and third slides were very stuck - the third slide reportedly having been stuck for “at least” 20 years! There are various dents here from pits and from travel in what was a handsome but only minimally protective soft gig bag. The very worst was a hard hit at the bell bow, which has now been raised. a couple of dents remain. Check out the photos. This is an older 731 which was originally produced with metal valve guides held in place by a small screw. It appears the screw hole on the first piston may have been damaged or stripped, so the guide is now simply held in place with a bit of solder. Despite what appears to be a quality repair (not mine, by the way) some intermittent, but insignificant noise can be heard occasionally on the up or down stroke. Don’t believe everything you read about the original Yamaha alloy. The pistons on this flugelhorn will be smooth and reliable with your favorite synthetic valve oil. Includes a classic zippered patent leather gig bag with red velour lining. This fine brasswind has undergone a professional cleaning and inspection prior to listing. We are happy to answer any questions or provide more pictures. All sales final.
