Description: This is a Japanese chisel made by a skilled blacksmith using traditional forging techniques with laminated steel construction. The high carbon steel provides an extremely sharp edge while the soft backing steel provides toughness and durability. Condition: New old stock. The chisel has never been sharpened or used and is in new condition. There may be light scratches or marks from storage as well as dried lacquer, please see the photos for details. As this is an unused item, you will need to set up and sharpen the chisel. The style is Tataki Atsu, known as a firmer or framing chisel in the west. This style of chisel is designed for quickly chopping or hogging out material. Thick and durable, this is the workhorse for traditional timber frame carpenters. It can also be used for detailed cabinetry work. With a metal hoop to prevent splitting of the wood handle, it is meant to be hit with a genno or metal hammer. Being larger than the standard bench chisel (Ooire Nomi) it works quite well for paring as well as chopping - a jack of all trades.
