Description: The most interesting aspect of this disk is that it shows how different Yma Sumac and her music were in front of an audienc rather than in a recording studio-not only is her singing different, but also so is the "sound" of her music. One clearly begins to understand the reasons for the problems that arose for the group once the recordings were released. Product information LabelEsp Disk Ltd. The 2013 CD and vinyl LP reissues improperly indicate that I was the producer and used my notes without permission. I did not produce the 2013 reissues and I am working to have them withdrawn since they were made in violation copyright laws. Additionally, the notes credit photos that are not in the booklet and over all, the layouts are quite amateur with the CD's back tray showing the LP's tracks. Perhaps I am not too impartial since I am the one who produced this [2006] CD but I'll try. As Yma Sumac's only commercial release of a live performance and if you've never attended an Yma Sumac concert you'll at least hear what it was like. In 1961 when this was recorded her voice was in its prime and it is also a rare recording to have the Inka Taki Trio which was comprised of Yma Sumac (soprano), Cholita Rivero (contralto, dancing) and Moises Vivanco (guitar and conductor). The recording itself was originally made for a TV broadcast and then later released onto vinyl and even on some 45 and 78 rpm singles. Unfortunately the videos could not be located (does any reader have a source?). The original 1961 LP from Bucharest, Romania's Electrecord label was put together rather randomly to make the tracks fit on the two sides of the vinyl disk. Using knowledge of Yma Sumac's usual repertoire and a copy of the original show program, which listed some songs not performed and some on this recording were not listed in the program as was typical of an Yma Sumac concert (she rarely performed the same as the program), we were able to come up with the likely order in which they were performed and we are presenting them here in that order. In addition to this being more true to an actual live performance in the song order, this is the first and only release to contain the overture - the instrumental piece that preceded Yma Sumac's appearance on the stage. Before now this song was heard only on an obscure 45 rpm single released as the B-side to Chuncho. The booklet and packaging contains photos from the actual performance and extensive notes written somewhat by me but based on translations of text from the original show program, the original LP's sleeve, and from the announcer who introduced each song and described it in Romanian. It was my hope to have these voice-intros on the CD too but, unfortunately, they had been removed from the masters for a later repressing of the LP and my own copies with them were not of a high enough quality. Their translations are in the booklet's text, though. There was another CD released some years ago that was made from a cassette tape recording of the LP, complete with stylus noise, under the title Yma Sumac Live In Russia but that CD was a bootleg on a "fake" record label called Elect - a play on words of Electrecord. The bottom line is that this CD is the real thing, made from the master tapes as supplied to us by Electrecord, and is a must for any Yma Sumac fan and only a limited number were made! Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2014 Yma Sumac was a great singer. The myth of her voive is based on two pillars, the fascinating beauty of her vocals and the superhuman range of her register. Actually the voice of Yma Sumac had an hypnotic power over her audence, the strange beauty of her voice together with her personality on stage, where she appeared dressed in amazing costumes adorned with expensive jewels and gold in a choreographic disply worthy of the golden days of Hollywood. Her sole presence was enough to dominate the public all over the world, a public that waited in anticipation to get a ticket and finally see the diva. The other key to her success was the unlimited range of her voice that embraced no less than five octaves. A trained opera soprano or tenor moves between two to three octaves at most, imagine five, this was the gift that allowed her to sing to the highest end of the soprano coloratura and descend to the deepest end of baritone register. The impression of this sonority in the Sovietic theather shocked audiences, who imagined bein in front of a supernatural human who lead them to higher spiritual spaces, making them live an unforgetable magical experience in this concert in 1961. Today the image of Yma Sumac flies alone in the history of music and her memory will always be of a mysterious, mystical, fascinating, unique artist with an ever lasting reign. Perhaps the legend has some truth and we must wait another thousand years to hear another Yma Sumac. 2 people found this helpful Share Report Alan Dean Foster 5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2011 It's fascinating to contrast the performances on this live recording with those of some of the same songs on the Capitol records. Of particular interest is the extended (as was common in her performances) version of her signature piece CHUNCHO, here with only guitar backing. While not as slick as the better-known version on the Capitol recording, here it is if anything even more haunting, and gives the listener a much better feel for what it must have been like to hear her in concert. Play it at night, in the dark, and be transported to the depths of Peru The disc has a very slight markon it ( won’t show up in a photos) - this does not affect the playing.
