Description: FORBIDDEN FRUIT Artist: CARL SCHLOESSER A HIGH QUALITY PHOTOGRAVURE PRINTED IN THE 1880'S!! PERFECT FOR FRAMING AS AN ART PRINT FOR YOUR DEN !! VERY ANTIQUE & OLD WORLD LOOKING. ITEM(s) OVER 110 YEARS OLD!! The "touch of nature" in this scene is a strong one. The world over, children imitate their elders; and if a man or a woman has any trait or habit that would be better honored in the breach than in the observance, it unfortunately happens that that very characteristic is the one which the imitative youngster is apt to regard as the most manly or most womanly attribute-the one whose imitation will most effectually accelerate the coveted period of mature grandeur and independence. And so a father may possess a score of virtues without inoculating his aspiring son with a single one of them; but if he cherish one habit of doubtful propriety or utility, then look out for its imitation. The story of clandestine smoking among ambitious boys is almost coeval with the history of tobacco, and is as familiar in one country as in another. The scene of our picture is a village school in Germany. Several of the boys, apparently by concert, have brought pipes with them; and now, at the noon recess, we behold them in various stages of the fasinating indugence. Indulgence and pleasure are not convertible terms, as little of these boys are discovering to their cost. The youth on the left, who is sending aloft a column of smoke with such a seemingly practised manner, is eyed sharply by a boy on the desk, who smiles either in admiration of so fine a specimen of the smoking art, or in ill-concealed suspicion that the somewhat pallid hero is not so comfortable as he makes believe. The grave burgomaster-looking boy, who is applying fire to his pipe, may possibly be having a season of enjoyment too deep for levity; but there is no question as to the true state of the youth in the corner: certainly he, at least, is not happy; and unless the countenances of several others in the group are deceptive, the scene of festivity is gradually changing to one of mourning. But a speedier crisis is at hand. The pedagogue has entered unseen, and stands at the door speechless with astonishment and righteous wrath. His face is a study of helpless perplexity. Something tremendous demands to be done, but he lacks the inspiration: the shock has been too great; he will need time to recover. Meanwhile the little fellow in the foreground-the only scholar aware of his presence-eyes him in childish wonder and expectation. Ah! there will be a wild panic soon among these truant partakers of " forbidden fruit." Let us hope that sick stomachs and smarting backs combined will induce them to defer the acquisition of the smoking accomplishment till they reach what by courtesy we are accustomed to call the " years of discretion." Carl Schloesser, born at Darmstadt, and a painter of the Diisseldorf school, is now a resident of London. He is eminent as a genre painter, and is especially successful in delineating the various phases of juvenile life and character. The original of our picture was purchased by Napoleon III.
