Why, then, it may be asked, should the young students who are contending for admission to the schools of the Royal Academy spend weeks and months* in stippling one drawing from a statue? Suppose that Mr. Poynter had spent a month in stippling the cheerful face before us, would such an investment of time and labour have proved him to be a better artist than this drawing proves him to be? Is not his knowledge just as evident from this drawing as it would have been from a thing stippled like a miniature?
